Our Inspiration
These are the sites and ideas that have inspired us to create this center.
A Background
- There are many different buildings and centers like this one, but there is none like ours. We've looked at a lot of different ideas and concepts. The main idea behind the center is to be a place of learning and creation. Below are some links and ideas that helped us get to this point. Please add yours as they come to you.
- Holger Cahill was the National Director of the Federal Art Project under the WPA from1935-1943. He serves as the basis of a lot of inspiration for me lately.

I added The New York Mills Regional Cultural Center in Minnesota after reading an article in Wired about John Davis, the Centers Founder. I thought that this had some great ideas that could be brought to our project. The Center holds an Arts Retreat location where artists can apply to leave at their farm for a time and focus solely on the art they are creating. Also they hold Think Off's where people hold philosophical conversations in front of live audiences at the center. All these are wonderful additions to our project.

I love the idea behind The Eyebeam Openlab, check out there ultra cool introduction:
"The Eyebeam OpenLab is a home for artists, engineers and hackers pioneering open source creativity. The first initiative of its kind, the lab is focused entirely on incubating experimental technologies and media that directly enrich the public domain."

Added the Urban Land Institute after reading Urban Land magazine. I thought that this might make a good reference for people that want to know more about urban planning kind of things.

Added DCTV (Downtown Community Television) which is a project in NYC that is best described by their own website.
" DCTV is the most honored independent nonprofit media center in the nation. Its productions, reaching over 100 million viewers each year, have received 15 national Emmy Awards, 3 duPont-Columbia Awards, and every other major award in the television field. In recognition of DCTV's artistic integrity and social commitment, the organization was awarded a highly competitive National Endowment for the Arts "Leadership Projects for the Millennium" grant."
Awesome project check out there website for more details, this is an other example that proves that this project is viable.

Added WTOP article on d.c. space. Go check out the article and listen to the audio portion, it's really cool to hear about a space like mine that was successful for close to 20 years. I'm really excited to hear about stuff like this. Please check it out and be as excited about it as I am.

Added a link to an amazing center that highlights a possible membership possible based on merit and need, but allows for people to "pay" there way in. But never replacing someone in needs spot.
Check it out The Gary Comer Youth center is stunning.

Added a link on the building page about coop retailing and also a link here about an idea of a build it yourself personal literary magazine. This be cool because we could rotate frequently the kinds of pieces we would have out on exhibition and then when people brought them up to the counter they could be bound.
